HOTEL REVIEW: Generator Hostel, Amsterdam

When it comes to accommodation, Amsterdam is expensive. Space is at a premium so be prepared to splash the cash for those much desired canal side locations. After a lot of searching for an affordable, boutique option, I came across Generator Hostel. This small chain of upmarket hostels has locations all over Europe where they promise a boutique hostel experience. Located on the east side of the city, Generator doesn't exactly have a central location but it's close to a tram stop which makes travelling into the city centre a breeze. The hostel is situated in Oosterpark and with many of the rooms looking out onto the park, it's a lovely and tranquil atmosphere.

However, as much as I wanted to love Generator, I felt our double room was extremely overpriced for what is basically a hostel with funky wallpaper. Our bedroom and en suite were generously sized with fantastic floor to ceiling windows, but the basic iron bed frames were creaky af. The common areas have a fantastic cafe, bar, and nightclub area but despite the noise all was quiet once you were in your room. But the thing that really irked me was having to pay to store your luggage. I've stayed in A LOT of hostels in my time and never once have I been charged for luggage storage. Our three nights cost around £400 which is not budget by any stretch of the imaginations so I was really disappointed with so many budget features. I understand this is a hostel, and not a hotel, and that would be fine if the prices reflected the difference, but on this occasion it did not. The concept is very similar to KEX in Reykjavik and even with their basic rooms, they do a far better job on the boutique hostel experience.

I'm not sure how much the dorm rooms are but I feel like Generator would be a good option if you're visiting Amsterdam with a large group of friends and want to share a room. But if you're a couple, or even travelling on your own, I would look elsewhere. On this occasion, I think I would have preferred a basic hotel where I wasn't going to feel ripped off.

    1. I did and it was very expensive and not that exciting. Affordable boutique hotels are my first port of call when travelling and then I go to Airbnb if nothing appeals. I thought Generator would be great, but it wasn't.
