Museum hopping

Check me out, another afternoon spent at the V&A plus the Science Museum for a bit of variety. This time my trip was in aid of checking out the Shadow Puppets exhibition i.e. camera-less photography. The exhibition was about making photos without using a camera and my gosh it was interesting. The photos displayed were extremely beautiful and thought provoking. The 5 artist featured all had a completely different style. This section of the V&A websites explains the different processes used when creating photographs and if definitely worth a read if you are a budding photographer.

As with most temporary exhibitions photography was not allowed but here are my favourite images by all 5 artists nevertheless

Some of the photos remind me a lot of certain scientific images such a cell microscopy and x-rays. I find that this interaction between art and science extremely interesting as the 2 different subjects are so contrasting in theory yet their juxtaposition in this instance creates a more beautiful picture and in some respects a more beautiful world.

I also went to check out the isotype exhibition which was a lot more interesting than I imagined. It's about using pictures to describe events and illustrate statistics and even though I'm a science gal and understand a great deal more than is necessary about statistics everyone can enjoy the fun little illustrations.

The theatre exhibition was also fascinating and included a life size replica of Kylie Minogue's dressing room as well as beautiful costumes from the Lion King Musical and old theatre posters.

After the V&A I headed next door to the Science Museum to check out the Trash Fashion exhibition. The exhibition show cases clothing that is made out of newly designed materials and recycled ones in a effort to cut down the waste produced in the fashion industry. Some of the dresses created were breathtaking including one made from newspapers. The exhibition was interesting but a lot smaller than I imagines so I'm glad I didn't go out of my way to visit it.

Before heading home I popped along to the Hummingbird Bakery for a cheeky vanilla cupcake. This time it was opened and showcasing it's newly refurbished interior.

Tomorrow my Dad is celebrating his 60th birthday by having a massive black tie party. I'm wearing my Lanvin x H&M dress but I desperately need a belt, preferably a thick black one with a little bit of gold, HELP!

Don't forget to use BOWDREAM to get 20% discount on Zara Taylor jewellery x

  7. I love the Science Museum - makes me feel like a kid everytime I go there. Definitely going to check out these exhibitions. I went to the Museum of Everything yesterday after reading your post on it and loved it - such a shame that it's closing for good soon. x

  8. The trash fashion exhibition is ace..! I had to do an essay on it a while back... as a lot of my tutors' work is in it! Most of the insanely interesting stuff was on the little interactive kiosk things... which I thought was a shame, as like you said because it was so small, most people wouldn't look and read in depth at all the information... I wish they'd said more key points around the displays.... But I found the piece about dyeing polyester fabric without water so exciting — using colour molecules with the catalyst to create the carbon chains in polyester manufacturing, to produce colour in the fibres in the first place...fascinating, boy I am such a nerd!!!

  9. Wait, so HOW did they take the pictures if not with camera?? I know you said that but im too lazy to check it out, I would rather somebody told me :P haha! With the trash fashion, I really dont think anyone would ever really wear it, like maybe Helena Bonham Carter but like not real people! :P Have fun at your dads party! :) (dont forget pictures!)

  14. Ohhh... Hummingbird Bakery is the absolute best and nothing beats a good day strolling through museums. Love the photos of the dresses! They are so gorgeous!

Was absolutely gutted a couple of weeks ago when I went to the most incredible museum in Zurich. There were so many things I wanted to snap photos of but you weren't allowed cameras and there were guards all over the place. Next time I'm going to sneak some shots though!

Happy Birthday to your Dad! xx
