I love Scandinavia and I love pop ups. When I heard that Allihopa, a Scandinavian-inspired smoked fish experts were doing a month long residency at The King & Co in Clapham I knew I had to visit. Allihopa is a street food stall that frequents markets like Kerb. I've never been to their food truck but I've heard that they served tasty food. Steve and I visited for dinner on Saturday night and all I can say is that the rumours are true, very tasty food is what you'll get.

Whilst I'm a huge fan of Scandinavia I must admit that I'm not an expert when it comes to their food. Sure, I've eaten a ton of smoked fish and my love for meatballs, hot dogs, and cinnamon buns is no secret but my knowledge doesn't really stretch much further than this. During our 2 week holiday in Iceland last year we ate an awful lot of junk food plus previous visits to Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland generally lacked any gastronomic delights for me. That being said, I'm keen to rectify this ignorance especially as there's quite a few Nordic restaurants scattered over London that I want to try.

We ordered the shrimp on toast and smocked haddock scotch egg to start. Unfortunately the scotch egg wasn't available that evening so we got the meatloaf instead and the kitchen kindly gifted us with a plate of pickles as an apology. A nice touch I though.

The shrimp on toast was great. It's like prawn cocktail with super chunky kings prawns and a lot more flavour. The meatloaf was delicious, quite rich but with a melt-in-the-mouth consistency. I'm really glad we ended up ordering this dish. I'm not a huge fan of pickles but the this plate was quite refreshing as the taste of vinegar wasn't too overpowering.

The main courses were excellent. The burger is actually a pork sandwich in a burger bun. The meat was succulent with a crispy crackling layer. I didn't notice the taste of the shrimp salad or if there was any shrimp at all but I did enjoy the taste of mustard and texture of the crispy onions against the soft, fatty meat. Lovely rosemary salted chips as well. The Swedish meat balls were perfect. Meaty beef balls served with lashings of creamy mash potato and thick, flavoursome gravy. The lingonberry jam added a wonderful sweetness and helped cut through the rich gravy. I wish I could eat this dish all over again.

Cinnamon bun with hot toffee sauce and ice cream

The dessert couldn't have been more delicious. a hot cinnamon bun covered with lashing of hot toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. Pure heaven.

I loved our meal at Allihopa. The food tastes great and the prices are extremely reasonably. I feel a little bad that we didn't try more smoked fish but I'm keen to go back and try brunch before the pop up ends.

  2. I have to say, I don't know much about Scandinavian food either, but this sure made me want to try more. The scotch egg sounded delicious too! Guess we'll have to catch it at Kerb sometime!
